The Heroics of Cricket Captains

Cricket captains are widely respected for their ability to motivate and inspire their players, yet there’s much more that goes into their roles than that. According to Mike Brearley’s excellent book The Art of Captaincy, great captains combine people-focus with tactical knowledge and the ability to communicate. Furthermore, they should make sacrifices necessary for building winning teams.

There have been plenty of examples, from Sir Ian Botham, admired by a generation due to his 1981 Ashes series win against Australia, to Rahul Dravid leading India to three World Cup victories during the 2000s. But it is rare for a cricket movie to capture all aspects of captaincy such as its pressures and rewards.

This documentary, funded by the BBC and produced for Pathe, chronicles the brief but highly captivating heyday of West Indian cricket in the 70s and 80s, as it combined Rastafarian roots with Black Power ideology to overthrow derogatory label of calypso cricket while winning multiple series against British teams. Postcolonial criticism may surface over assertion that cricket unifies men regardless of background, colour or creed but otherwise this irresistible archive feast with reggae soundtrack is sure to grab audiences’ attention!

The Heroics of TV Captains

On a TV show or movie, the Captain often takes on tasks that could have been assigned to lower-ranking personnel – in order to justify his presence and establish his superior skill level. Sometimes this means doing things which would be considered highly dangerous or immoral by lesser officers.

TV Captains tend to resemble cricket captains in that their roles often carry the same dramatic and suspenseful tenor, providing drama and suspenseful scenes on screen. Furthermore, most audiences view them as integral players within teams and often pivotal figures within shows and movies.

While The Captains is an entertaining documentary, it can sometimes become too long and repetitive. Still, William Shatner makes for great interview clips when discussing various aspects of being Captain on Star Trek; also convention footage adds some great moments that make us laugh; I wish there had been more one-on-one dialogue like there is in William Shatner/Leonard Nimoy Mind Meld: Secrets Behind Voyage of a Lifetime from 2004.
